RE: Favorite Michigan SP?

We actually have two favorite campgrounds. We like Muskegon SP the channel unit because we can watch the car ferry and an occasional lake boat come up the channel from Lake Michigan to Lake Muskegon on the river walk and Aloha SP because we like the beach there and they have a dog friendly beach also.

RE: Diesel Vs Gas -Ford milage- - UPDATED

I have a 2003 6.0 PSD F250 CC and am very pleased with it. This is all pencil and paper and not the computer I am getting 20-21.5 on the highway at 75+, 15-17 local and 11-12.5 towing. We tow all over Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee and run to South Carolina once a year at the Christmas holidays. Would I go back to a gas motor, not on your life. Maintenance does cost a little more but to me it is worth it and I do most of my own except transmission fluid changes. It is cheaper.

RE: Is staying under the factory tow rating really possible?

While I applaud the State police enforcement on GVWR what about the speeders out there. I must say when traveling in a state with strict enforcement, it is a lot easier on the nerves and driving. When ever we are out of state and come back it seems that as soon as we hit the line it is green flag time. When towing a rig and getting pushed around by these guys it gets a bit unnerving. Most of these people think we can stop these rigs on dime and cut in front of you or worse yet cross all the lanes trying to get somewhere fast. I know this is not only true for us Rver's but for the big rigs too. I know you are probably short on help but how do we slow these people down or better yet give the folks pulling rigs some courtesy. I stick to the right lane most of the time but there are times I pass an occasional slower driver and then it is like I can't get out of the way fast enough. To me this is just as dangerous as someone over GVWR.

RE: New Twist on Weight

Wow. That got chewed up and spit out a lot. This has been some good reading. A lot of good comments both ways. The point I was trying to make is when you upgrade make sure you are getting enough vehicle. Merely going from a 3/4 to a 1 ton is not usually the answer as you can see. By the way a friend of mine and I visited the frame shop and did some measuring. Guess what! They are the same except for the tires. He has a 1 ton same year. We both have PSD's, same rear end, and same trans. If I were looking to up grade from a 3/4 it would be at least a 450/4500 series because the difference to a 1 ton is not enough. There is a lot that goes into being safe on the road besides having just the right tow vehicle. A person has to know his/her capabilities and limitations in towing the rig, know the truck and trailer like the back of your hand, and have eyes in the back of your head. You have to rely on yourself as you travel not on the other guy. I don't believe there is anyone I would not trailer with because I believe there is a lot of experience here. Like I said, I have been at it for thirty years and safety has always been first. Like was mention on another note, I bet the majority of units on the road are overweight to some extent. Thanks all for the comments and Happy Camping this summer.

RE: New Twist on Weight

Robbins they are 265/75R16 E rated 3415lbs each so says the tire sidewall. Jim an Linda I have been at this for over thirty years and am not about to put myself or anyone else in any danger. I do not take things like this lightly without a lot of research and asking questions of people with experience in the business. That person could have just as easily taken my money and run but he didn't and he was honest. IMO you do not stay in that business for 30 years by not being honest. These people deal in all size trucks from light to heavy duty and a lot of these are running down the interstate. I am sure they would not put anyone and their reputation in jeopardy. Especially in this day and age of lawsuits

New Twist on Weight

I read a lot with interest about weights on this site. I am a year and a half from retirement and eight months from the final payment on my 2003 F250 which we purchased in late 2003 before the 04's came out. I am not planning on spending big bucks to buy a new truck to pull anything much bigger than we have which is a 305RLDS Advantage with a GVWR of 11,500 lbs. With this in mind I talked to a truck spring retailer who has been in business for over 30 years about ways to beef my truck a little looking at putting about 2100 lbs of pin weight in it. To my surprise he told me that my 250 had the same springs as a 350. He said the big difference in weight capability between the two was in the tire rating. I believe up2nogood had mentioned this at one time. He also told me to use Timbrens or Air bags to alleviate any sag or to level the load. The newer Fords with the higher weight ranges were due to the box frame that Ford went to which is stronger than the channel frame. With this said I am comfortable with our choice even thought it may seem heavy to some.

RE: need help picking summer camping destination, any great ideas

If you want a short trip into Michigan try the Sterling St Park on Lake Erie in Monroe. It is a short drive up I 75. The park was just completely revamped a few years ago and is really nice. All parking areas are black top and the middle of the CG is full hook ups. All biking and hiking trails are black toped also. Lots of historic things to see in Monroe and Cabalas is only 17 mi from the CG. I might add that all areas around the camp site are grass. Not a lot of shade as things are still growing.

Programing My Truck

Hi all. I have been reading with interest the different opinions on chips and programing a diesel. We are getting close to doing some long getaways soon and I am thinking of putting a banks system on my F250 6.0 power stoke. What I am looking at is the stinger system from Banks, exhaust air box and programmer, along with a PDA to monitor temps and such. I am a believer that if you do something like this get it from the people in the know and been in it for a long time thus my choice of banks. I am not in it for the mileage as I know it depends on the driver. Any comments are appreciated. I know everyone has their favorites.

RE: i guess i am search challenged

Left over antifreeze in the hot water tank can cause the sulfur/rotten egg smell. It gets there when you winterize and then flush out the system in the spring without flushing the hot water tank. I had he same experience one summer and never heard the end of it. The best way I found was to flush the fresh water system and flush the hot water tank with the drain plug out. I was surprised how much pink antifreeze came out. I have no more trouble with the smell as long as I flush the hot water tank in the spring.

RE: towing with a SRW or A DRW

Poppy, I towed with a Hensley for three years before moving up to a 5er and I am here to tell you that there is no finer hitch out there for eliminating sway. It got me out of a couple of jams ( not created by me )on the road at highway speeds. I had to panic break once and change lanes quickly and the TT was right on the mark behind me. The only thing it took some practice putting a square peg in a square hole hitching up.

Hi all. Am new to the site and have been reading it for a couple of weeks now. There is a lot of good information out there. I have been RVing for 36yrs. Started in a PUP then to a TT and now own a 5vr. Some of the best times traveling have been in the RV. Just the two of us and the dog now. Am going to retire in a couple of years and travel.
